SST Series Overview

Simplex Fuel Tanks - SST 100 Gallon Day Tank

The Simplex SST Series comprises a line of fuel tanks at capacities of 10 and 25 gallons. The standard SST package includes a UL 142 listed tank, a 2 GPM Super-XL Pump, and a UL 508 listed Analog Controller.

The SST Series is fully compatible for network integration with the full line of Simplex Fuel Supply Systems, including packaged pump systems, tank filling systems, filtration systems, digital fuel and tank management systems and digital monitoring and data systems. The SST Series, when supplied with a Simplex digital controller, is MODBUS and Ethernet compatible with most tank gauging systems.

SST Features

The SST Series is comprised of highly reliabile 10 and 25 gallon fuel tanks used as day tanks, main supply tanks, transfer tanks, return tanks, and filter tanks. Manual tanks for use as a basic storage tanks are also available.
The SST Series is fully compatible for network integration with the full line of Simplex Fuel Supply Systems, including packaged pump systems, tank filling systems, filtration systems, digital fuel and tank management systems and digital monitoring and data systems.
SST fuel tanks are UL 142 labeled double-walled, suitable for indoor or outdoor use.
Controllers for normal duty products are UL508 listed, Type 1 indoor, Type 3R, 4, 12 indoor/outdoor. Hazardous location controllers are available.
Codes and standards: City of Chicago approval #E9135, #E9136; L.A.F.D. Approval - Los Angeles Fire Department approved day tanks - use SST/SRS Series Day Tank; Wisconsin approval #940065U; and Florida EQ #732.
The SST Series integrates a tank of required capacity with a level controller and fill control. On-board fill pumps and return pumps are typical. Remote pumping systems are available for filling of multiple tanks, management of multiple source tanks or when required by pipe run or pump size conditions.
Both digital and analog controllers are available. Digital controllers are PLC based and network compatible. Digital controllers utilize both a point sensing float switch input and a 4-20mA analog to-digital input which displays on a panel indicator and provides a 4-20mA output. Analog controllers are based on the time-proven Simplex SST Controller.

SST Options

Mechanical Option 010, 015, Auxiliary Hand Pump, is recommended for installation on all Day Tanks equipped with motor-pumps. The hand pump is used for initial priming of the fuel line from the main tank and as a backup to the motor-pump.

Option 060, 062 Fuel Strainer, is recommended whenever there is a possibility of fuel contamination. Day Tank pumps have extremely close tolerances. Fine abrasives in suspension degrade pumping ability and can jam pump.

In order to assure maintenance of pump prime, one of the following options is recommended for installation on all Day Tanks equipped with motor-pumps: Option 070: Check valve; Option 080, 083: Solenoid valve; or Option 090: Foot valve.

Duplex Pump Systems Duplex pump options are used to increase the reliability of a day tank system through the addition of a second, backup pump and level control. In a duplex system, one pump is designated the "lead" pump and the other is the "lag" pump. The lead pump automatically refills the day tank over the tank's normal operating range of 50% to full. Normally, once the tank has been initially filled, the fuel level should never drop below 50%. Less than 50% is indicative of either a failure of the lead pump or consumption in excess of pump capacity. The lag pump and its separate level controller, acting as a backup senses a drop in fuel level below 50% and starts the lag pump, which then continues to run, along with the lead pump, until the tank is full.

When ordering, remember that duplex systems include two motor-pumps and therefore require a quantity of two of any option related to the motor or pump, such as solenoid valves, strainers, etc.

346 - Two running time meters
347 - Manual duplex pump selector switch

Gravity Fed Tanks A day tank will be gravity-siphon fed when:
1) The main tank is above the day tank.
2) The main tank is on the approximate same grade as the day tank and the level in the main tank is at times above the level in the day tank and/or supply piping runs overhead.

If any of these conditions exists, a positive fuel shut-off automatic control must be added to the day tank. Simplex recommends options 060, 080, 087, 376, 377, and 190/191 for all gravity-fed systems. Add options 383 and 390 as an additional precaution.
